Merchant’s hotel and Restaurant

We bought a travel zoo voucher for two courses each from the a la carte with a glass of prosecco for £39. They also do a fixe prix lunch menu that is just as wonderful as the a la carte and they often have a deal on the usual voucher sites which are great to take advantage of. We’ve been back three times in a  month because we just love the food. The service is impeccable with attentive staff who are warm, friendly and funny. This place should be busier! The biggest surprise is it always seems so empty.

Ben Chaplin is the chef who has truly created something very special here. British classics with delightful twists are balanced with more exotic and surprising options where you can absolutely taste the quality of the ingredients that have been treated just perfectly.

Upon arrival, we were given complimentary breads (gorgeous, hot rolls with beetroot and fennel and rosemary and onion – oh my god) as well as an amuse bouche of goats cheese mousse. This was unexpected, appreciated and delicious!

Although the menu changes with the season (as it should) here are our menu tips, should you see  them:

Fillet of beef with Stilton dauphinoise
Turbot with artichoke risotto
The fois gras with Welsh rarebit
Tiramisu
Red mullet with tomato salsa
Pork belly with Asian slaw from the lunch menu.

I basically cannot say enough good things, just book a table already!
